Month of August

 The month is named in honour of Augustus Caesar,
who reformed the calendar of Julius Caesar,
and named this month from his own name.

There are numerous legends and myths about Birthstone healing powers and their
therapeutic influence.  According to these legends, wearing a gemstone during the
assigned month heightened healing powers.  For the full effect, individuals needed
to own all twelve and alternate them monthly.

Birthstone ~ Peridot
Flowers ~ gladioli and poppy

Noteworthy Days

August 1 ~ Lammos Day...The traditional harvest fest when the first bread
was made from the new corn.

August 6 ~ the first Monday of August is celebrated in Ontario as Civic Holiday.
Historically, this was linked to the abolition of slavery in the British Empire (1834).
In Canada, this date was primarily chosen since it is between Canada Day and
LabourDay,  In Ontario, it may be known as Simcoe Day...in honour of the first
Lieutenant Governor of Upper Canada.  Civic Holiday is honoured in this province
...also  in British Columbia, Saskatchewan, Manitoba and New Brunswick.

Remember also, the Canadian National Exhibition (CNE) is yearly featured
in Toronto from mid August to and including Labour Day...a Great Family Event!

August 3 to 27 ~ Edinburgh is recognized as the largest Arts Festival in the world.

August 25 to 27 ~ The Glenn Miller Festival...the largest swing, jazz and jive

                                                          August Musings

                          August brings so many things to mind...
                          like country fairs...with foods and rides easy to find.
                          Dog days of summer start being to a close...
                          but there's still time for a lake visit or just a sprinkler hose.
                          August, August, we thank you for your role in our summer,
                          Without you, no doubt, this season would be a bummer.

                          Harvest
                          August brings its gardens of scented bliss;
                          August brings us great stacks of  giant clouds;
                          August brings us corn plants standing like rows of soldiers;
                          August brings us watermelons, full and heavy, warmed by the sun.
                                                              (unknown author)

Let us all enjoy August's thirty one days.
Get up!  Go out!  Discover!
